Patrick Anthony Residence

A historic structure reflecting the city’s changing face

About

The Patrick Anthony Residence is a historic structure with a storied past that reflects the city’s changing face. Developed in 1912 by Gordon R. Baird, a hardware store owner on Granville Street, the building was designed by the architectural firm Braunton & Leibert and constructed by F.J. Kelby for $33,000. Initially opening as The Spokane Rooms, the building transitioned through various identities, including the Francis Faye Hotel in the late 20th century. Today, it is known as the Patrick Anthony Residence, a single-room occupancy (SRO) hotel managed by Atira following much-needed renovations. In 2012, the building was listed among Vancouver’s worst rental properties, with inspectors identifying 133 issues that required attention. Thanks to its renovation, the Patrick Anthony Residence continues to serve as a vital part of the city’s housing landscape, preserving its architectural legacy while providing shelter to some of Vancouver’s most vulnerable residents.
