Time and Gold Mural

Vancouver’s nod to a centuries-old copper plate etching

About

For three decades, a striking six-story mural at 555 West Georgia captivated Vancouver’s passersby, depicting three goldsmiths meticulously working in their workshop. Painted in 1993, the mural was a nod to a centuries-old copper plate etching by Christoph Weigel, featuring a master goldsmith and his apprentices deeply engrossed in their craft. The piece, chosen by renowned jeweler Toni Cavelti, who owned the art deco Randall Building since 1975, became a cherished fixture in the city’s urban landscape. However, the mural was recently obscured during renovations in January 2024, much to the dismay of those who admired its historical and artistic significance. The mural, a tribute to the goldsmith’s trade and a unique architectural feature, now lives on in memory, symbolizing a bygone era of craftsmanship and the ever-evolving face of Vancouver’s cityscape.
